The government has assured the Makonde community living in the Coast that they will be issued with national identity cards in time for them to register as voters.

Senior assistant director of the National Registration Bureau in charge of Coast Aggrey Masai Wednesday said they will strive to ensure that the Makonde, whose origin is Mozambique and most of whom are settled in Kwale County, will get IDs before the February 14 deadline.

Most of them have waiting cards.

Mr Masai said issuance of the IDs, which are currently still being processed, will begin next week.

“We are going to issue the cards simultaneously in both Kwale and Kilifi counties.

“We will visit the different places these people are and give them their cards,” added Mr Masai.

At the start of the mass voter registration on Monday, the Makonde, desperate to register to vote for the first time as Kenyans, were turned away from polling centres in Kwale when they sought to register using the waiting cards.

Mr Masai said, already, a number of the ID cards have been processed, but they are waiting to have all the cards produced before issuing them to the anxious owners.

“We are going to issue the cards simultaneously both in Kwale and Kilifi counties.

“We will visit the different places these people are and give them their cards,” added Mr Masai.
